Calhoun is the only town of its size in the northern half of the area we cover, and that size is the hardest one to estimate a fence on.
7,199 homes, and why the middle is the hard one
Calhoun sits at 7,199 homes, too big to be open country and too small to be all subdivision. That middle is the least predictable thing to quote. Big towns are mostly platted subdivision with repeatable runs, and small ones are mostly open ground with long straight lines. Calhoun is both at once, sometimes on the same street, so run lengths here vary more than in any other town we work in and a number quoted without seeing the ground is a guess.
1986, and what's coming down
The older half of Calhoun was built before 1986, so its fences are mostly on their second life. What comes down is usually a mix: wood at the back where privacy mattered and chain link down the sides where containment was the whole job. That combination is worth keeping, not unifying, because it costs less and it was the right answer the first time.
Post depth is the whole job
Everything that goes wrong with a fence over time starts at the post. A post set shallow leans, a post set in the wrong hole size moves, and a post backfilled with the soil that came out of the hole moves faster than one set properly. None of that is visible on the day it's finished, which is exactly why it gets skipped. It's the single largest difference between a fence that looks the same in ten years and one that doesn't.

How deep should a fence post go?
Deep enough that the part in the ground is a meaningful fraction of the part above it, and in a hole wide enough for the concrete to do something. What we build to is on the maintenance guide, and it's the part of the job worth paying attention to.
