Decks & Fences in Fannin County, GA

Blue Ridge is the highest ground we build on. 350 feet of relief, and most of the housing is cabins.

350 feet of relief on the highest ground we work

Blue Ridge runs 1,553 to 1,903 feet, a 350-foot spread. A deck up there is rarely a rectangle on flat ground. It's a wraparound on tall posts with beam work and footings cut into a hillside, which is exactly the job in our own photographs from up there. That kind of build is decided by the slope, not by a catalog.

220 owner-occupied homes out of 787

Only 33.8 percent of Blue Ridge housing is owner occupied, because a large share of it is second homes and rentals around the lake. 220 owner-occupied homes is a small market and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise. What it does mean is that the work up here skews toward screened porches and decks built for a view, because that is what the property is for.

Blue Ridge Lake and the Toccoa

Blue Ridge Lake covers 3.84 square miles inside the town and the Toccoa River another 0.4. Water and slope together is the hardest combination for a footing: the ground moves, and it moves downhill. Anything we build up there gets its posts set below where the ground stays soft, which is a decision made on site.

It is a long way and the drive is real

Eighty-five minutes on mountain roads, not interstate. We do go, and we've built up there, but it's grouped work and a small repair usually isn't worth what the drive adds. For a deck or a porch on a cabin it's an ordinary job. Describe the spot and we'll be straight with you about whether it's worth our trip.
