Dalton housing came up in 1982 and Varnell in 1989. The two sit close together, and both are middle-aged: old enough that original decks are at or past the end of their run, young enough that the framing methods are recognizable. On steep ground the posts are longer and the loads are less forgiving, which is why we start repair and replacement here underneath the deck, not on top of it.

Neither Dalton nor Varnell has a named lake, pond or river inside its boundary, which is unusual for a county this size. So the reason to screen a porch in Whitfield is elevation and breeze, not insects coming off standing water. One city, one small town

Whitfield pairs a big city with a small town, which is a wide gap in lot pattern: Dalton runs city blocks, Varnell runs open ground. Running a fence across falling ground is its own problem in both, because a fence follows the grade or it steps down it, and those two look completely different when finished.
