A small town on high ground where almost everybody owns. Ball Ground is the longest of our four Cherokee County runs, and we have built a pool deck here.
About 62 minutes and 46.1 road miles. Just over half of that is interstate, I-75 down to Knox Bridge Highway and I-575 back up, and it's the longest of the four Cherokee County runs.
Two thousand eight hundred people at the top of Cherokee County

2007 housing, and nineteen summers on the surface
Take a Ball Ground house at random and it was probably finished around 2007. A deck framed alongside a house that age has generally not moved, but what you walk on and what you lean on have absorbed nineteen Georgia summers of sun and standing wet, so the useful conversation starts with boards, rails and fasteners instead of with the structure under them. That's repair and replacement of the parts that actually wore out, and washing and sealing what's left is what buys the rest of it more time. Where somebody wants more deck than the builder ever left, a new build is the other road.
1,188 homes, and a fence line the neighbors have half decided
This is a small town and 1,188 homes is the whole of it. At that size a run is usually bounded by what the people either side already stood up instead of by one pattern repeated down an entire street, so what gets built has to meet two existing lines and still look deliberate. Of the 1,153 occupied homes, 982 have an owner living inside them. Hardly anywhere else we work comes close. A beam and a set of posts is a twenty year decision, and twenty year decisions get made by the people who expect to be standing under them. That's why a pergola, or a patio cover with a real roof on it, does well in a town shaped like this one.
No lake, no pond, no river inside the town
Nothing named sits inside the Ball Ground line. That leaves a screened porch here to argue for itself, and it manages: screen is what turns a covered slab from something you look at into a room you can still eat in after dark. Nothing in Ball Ground sits below 941 feet
The lowest ground in Ball Ground is 941 feet, the highest is 1,261, and it averages 1,103. Three hundred and twenty feet of change on ground that never drops low means the fall runs off shoulders and ridges instead of down into a bottom, which is a friendlier place to build than it sounds. A retaining wall on a shoulder gets a purchase at both ends. A wall that has to stand alone across the middle of a flat yard doesn't.
No named creek crosses this town at all
Most towns around here have a creek or a branch running through them somewhere, and Ball Ground has neither. With no channel on the map to read off, the fall under a patio, a walkway or a run of steps has to come off what somebody measures standing in the yard, which is where it should have come from anyway.
A fire pit needs a decision before it needs a ring

Yes, for work that fills a day, not an hour of one. We have built a pool deck in this town, so the drive has been made and it'll be made again for the right job.
Is a deck around a pool built differently from any other deck?
The pool sets the shape and it sets where people walk, which is the reverse of a back yard deck where the door decides both. The surface also stays wet far more of the time. Both of those change the layout well before anybody picks a board.
The house dates to around 2007. Is the deck due?
Probably not the frame. On housing that age what gives out is what you walk on and what you lean on. Pictures of the boards, the stair and the rail usually settle it without anybody driving up.
